Running a Session

  • The Footage screen shows Ready (green) for the footage you’re testing against
  • The iPad is charged, in landscape, unplugged, at normal brightness
  • You know which footage set you’re using, and you will write it down
  • The athlete has done a familiarisation run — see Session Protocol

Tap Start session from the home screen. The setup screen shows:

  • Sport — read-only
  • Trials — how many shots are available
  • Trial count chips: 20, 40, 60

Pick 60 for anything you intend to record. Shorter runs often fail to converge and give you no threshold at all.

Tap Start session. The button reads Preparing… while it builds the trial order.

If you see “No annotated shots available. Import footage and annotate it first.”, there is nothing eligible — import footage, or check you haven’t excluded everything.

Read this aloud, the same way every time:

“You’ll see a clip of an opponent hitting. The screen goes black before they make contact. Tap where you think it’s going.

Guess. A guess is always better than no answer — running out of time counts as wrong. Tap as soon as you have an impression; don’t deliberate.

It’s meant to feel impossible. You’ll get about one in five wrong even when you’re doing well. That’s the test working, not you failing.”

The last point matters. The staircase actively drives the athlete to ~79% accuracy. An athlete who doesn’t know this reads their own error rate as failure and changes strategy mid-session, which is exactly what makes a session fail to converge.

Hand the iPad to the athlete. It begins immediately — there is no countdown.

Each trial runs through four phases:

  1. Fixation — a + cross with the word Watch, for 500 ms. Eyes to centre
  2. Playback — the clip plays, then the screen blacks out before contact
  3. Response — the zone grid arms at the instant of blackout. The athlete taps a zone
  4. FeedbackCorrect (green), Incorrect (red), or Too slow (amber), plus the correct zone, for 800 ms

The athlete sees a trial counter and a progress bar. They do not see the current occlusion offset or the staircase state — showing it would change how they respond.

Do not coach during the run.

Tap End session in the top bar. The confirmation reads “Abandon this session? Trials already recorded are kept, but no threshold will be reported.”
